Accessible bathroom modifications

Level entry, grab rails, wider doorways and slip-rated floors, so the bathroom keeps working as circumstances change.

Accessible does not have to mean clinical. Almost everything that makes a bathroom safer for someone with limited mobility also makes it better for everyone else: no step to trip on, a floor you cannot slip on, a shower you can reach the tap of before you get wet, and a door that opens wide.

There are two versions of this work. Modifying an existing bathroom, which is fast and comparatively cheap, and rebuilding to a standard such as AS 1428 for full wheelchair access, which needs a certain amount of floor area and usually means moving at least one wall. Say which one you are after in the brief so the quotes match.

Typical duration: A few days for targeted modifications, three to five weeks for a full rebuild.

What is included+ + +

What a quote should cover.

01

Level entry shower

Removing the hob and step so the floor runs flat into the shower, with falls to a linear drain.

02

Grab rails

Rated rails fixed to noggings or backing plates in the wall, not to sheeting alone.

03

Slip-rated flooring

Floor tiles chosen for wet barefoot traffic, and consistent across the whole room.

04

Wider access

Widening the doorway, or replacing a swing door with a cavity slider to free up circulation space.

05

Fixture heights

Pan height, basin height, mirror and rail positions set for the person who will use the room.

06

Certified waterproofing

Membrane to AS 3740, which matters more in a level-entry room than anywhere else.

If a quote leaves one of these out, it is not cheaper. It is smaller.

What it usually costs.

Indicative Sydney ranges for 2026. Your quotes will land where your layout, access and selections put them, which is exactly why three of them are useful.

Targeted modification$3k – $9k

Grab rails, a shower seat, a hand-held rose and a slip-rated floor in an existing bathroom.

Level entry conversion$12k – $25k

Removing the hob, re-screeding, extending the membrane and retiling the room.

Full accessible rebuild$25k – $45k+

Rebuilding to AS 1428 circulation, often relocating a wall and the doorway.

Indicative only. Not a quote. Excludes approvals and unforeseen structural repair.

Questions+ + +

Accessible bathroom modifications, answered.

01

Can this be funded through NDIS or My Aged Care?

+

Home modifications are commonly funded under both schemes, but funding decisions and any occupational therapist assessment sit with the scheme, not with us. Get quotes first, since both processes normally need written quotes to assess.

02

Do grab rails need to be installed by a builder?

+

They need to be fixed to structure. Rails screwed into plasterboard alone will pull out under load, which defeats the purpose. A renovator will install noggings or backing plates behind the sheeting, which is why this is best done during a renovation.

03

What is the minimum space for a wheelchair accessible bathroom?

+

AS 1428.1 sets out circulation space requirements that most standard Australian bathrooms cannot meet without moving a wall. If full compliance is your goal, say so in the brief so renovators quote the structural work rather than a fit-out.

04

Will an accessible bathroom hurt resale value?

+

A well-designed one should not. Level entry showers, slip-rated floors and generous door widths are read as modern rather than medical. Rails can be removed later, and if backing plates are installed they can be refitted at any time.
