Laundry renovations
Usually sharing a wall, a waste line and a trade schedule with the bathroom, which is exactly why you should quote them together.
The laundry is the room everybody leaves until last and then regrets. It is also the cheapest room in the house to renovate well, because the finish expectations are lower and the fixture count is small: a tub, a bench, some cupboards, and somewhere for the machines to live.
The single biggest saving available is scheduling. If the laundry backs onto the bathroom, the same plumber, tiler and waterproofer are already on site with the same materials. Quoted together it is often 20 to 30 percent cheaper than the same work done six months later.
Typical duration: One to two weeks on site, or nothing extra if it runs alongside a bathroom job.

01How much does a laundry renovation cost?

A European laundry in a cupboard typically runs $4,000 to $8,000. A full standalone laundry with joinery, tub, benchtop and tiling is usually $8,000 to $16,000. Doing it alongside a bathroom renovation reduces both figures noticeably.
02Can the laundry and bathroom be quoted together?

Yes, and they should be. Tick the laundry option on the quote form and the same renovators will price both. It shares demolition, waterproofing, tiling and fit-off, which is where the saving comes from.
03Does a laundry need waterproofing?

Yes, under AS 3740 laundries are wet areas. The extent is smaller than a bathroom, generally the floor and the wall behind the tub and machines, but it still needs to be done properly and certified.
04What is the most useful thing to add?

Bench space over or beside the machines. Almost every laundry complaint traces back to having nowhere to put a basket down. After that, a full-height broom cupboard and a decent tub tap with clearance for a bucket.
