The small, awkward room off the main bedroom. Less square metreage than a main bathroom, but rarely much less work.
People expect an ensuite to cost half what a main bathroom costs because it is half the size. It rarely does. The same trades attend, the same waterproofing certificate is required, and the same number of set-ups happen. Square metres of tiling is one of the smaller variables in a bathroom quote.
What does change is the design problem. An ensuite is usually long and narrow, opens off a carpeted bedroom, and has to work at six in the morning without waking anyone. Door swing, light placement, exhaust noise and the position of the toilet matter far more here than in a family bathroom.

01Is an ensuite cheaper than a main bathroom?

Somewhat, but not proportionally. Expect roughly 15 to 25 percent less than the same specification in a main bathroom, because tiling area is only one part of the cost and every other trade still has to attend.
02Can you renovate an upstairs ensuite without touching the ceiling below?

Sometimes. If the waste and water can stay where they are, the floor below often survives untouched. Moving the toilet almost always means opening the ceiling underneath, so ask for that as a separate line in the quote.
03What is the best layout for a narrow ensuite?

Usually the shower at the far end, the vanity nearest the door, and the toilet between them against the wet wall. It keeps plumbing on one wall and gives you a clear run of floor, which is what makes a narrow room feel usable.
04Should I do the ensuite and main bathroom together?

If the budget allows, yes. Doing both at once typically saves 10 to 15 percent against doing them separately, because setup, delivery, waterproofing and tiling all happen once. It also means one disruption instead of two.
