Small bathroom renovations

Under four square metres, where every millimetre of the layout and every fixture dimension has to earn its place.

Small bathrooms are the best value renovation in most Australian homes. The material cost is genuinely lower, and the impact on how the house feels is out of all proportion to the floor area. They are also the least forgiving: in a room this size, a vanity that is 100mm too deep is a room you have to turn sideways in.

Almost every good small bathroom does the same handful of things. Wall-hung fixtures so you can see floor. A single large tile format so there are fewer grout lines. A frameless screen or no screen at all. Recessed storage instead of anything that projects. And light where you actually need it, at the mirror.

Typical duration: Two to four weeks on site.

What is included+ + +

What a quote should cover.

01

Layout study

Testing two or three arrangements against real fixture dimensions before anything is ordered.

02

Wall-hung fixtures

Vanity and pan on a concealed cistern to free up visible floor and make cleaning easy.

03

Recessed storage

Niches in the shower and a mirrored shaving cabinet set into the wall cavity.

04

Large format tiling

Fewer joints reads as a bigger room, and modern rectified tiles let you run a 2mm grout line.

05

Frameless screen

A single fixed panel, or an open walk-in with a fall to a linear drain.

06

Waterproofing

Full membrane to AS 3740, certified, with the whole floor treated as a wet area in a walk-in layout.

If a quote leaves one of these out, it is not cheaper. It is smaller.

Questions+ + +

Small bathroom renovations, answered.

01

How much does a small bathroom renovation cost in Sydney?

+

Most small bathrooms and powder rooms land between $12,000 and $20,000 for a full renovation on the existing footprint. Anything under about $10,000 is usually a cosmetic refresh rather than a new membrane and new tiling.

02

Should I put a bath in a small bathroom?

+

Only if it is the only bathroom in the house and you need it for resale or small children. A 1500mm bath consumes most of a small room. A generous walk-in shower usually delivers a far better daily experience.

03

Do large tiles really make a small bathroom look bigger?

+

Yes, mostly because there are fewer grout lines to read as visual clutter. Running the same tile up the wall and across the floor amplifies it further. The trade-off is that large formats need a flatter substrate, which can add preparation cost.

04

Can I keep the existing layout to save money?

+

Almost always the right call in a small bathroom. Keeping plumbing points where they are can save $3,000 to $6,000, and in a room this size the layout is usually already the only sensible arrangement.
